City mayor’s legendary license plate could fetch $600,000 — and it’s being sold for a significant reason

This legendary license plate belonging to a city mayor could fetch as much as $600,000, and it’s being sold for a significant reason.

The plate has been with the Leeds city council for over a century.

But, as financial issues have arisen, there’s been talk of selling the plate to help plug a hole in the budget.

But why is it so important to the English city and its people?

Licence plates aren’t just for show

You probably already know this, but license plates are vital to have on a car

The information, such as what year the car was made, as well as tax stats, can be included on the little plate on the front and back of cars.

However, some can cost a small fortune.

In fact, one billionaire bought the ‘most noble‘ license plate for $9.5 million.

Plus, recently, an extremely rare license plate sold for $2 million because of a single letter.

But this license plate is special for very different reasons.

The license plate is legendary

While you might not think license plates can have a lot of history, in this case, there’s tons of it.

In fact, it’s been in the possession of the UK’s Leeds City Council, and specifically the Mayor, for over a century.

“When the Motor Car Act was passed in 1903, requiring all cars to have number plates, Leeds resident Rowland Winn, a motoring pioneer and founding member of the Automobile Association, bought the very first one issued in Leeds,” said the city council.

And, after his friend, Arthur Currer Briggs, became Lord Mayor of the northern English town, Winn gifted the unique license plate to the city for use on the ‘civic’ vehicle.

And as they say, the rest is history.

Well, not quite.

You see, the plate could be sold on – but it’s for a vital reason.

There’s an important reason behind the sale

It seems that Leeds has a huge budget gap of over $1 million. So selling the historic license plate could be the city council’s saving grace.

It’s even been claimed that it could fetch as much $600,000. And although it isn’t quite the seven figures the city needs, it could still help the council out.

But don’t worry, the council still has some great license plates in its possession. In fact, it could be replaced with an equally impressive plate – L6EDS.

So, if the sale goes ahead, one lucky bidder will be driving around with a piece of motoring history on their car. The post City mayor’s legendary license plate could fetch $600,000 — and it’s being sold for a significant reason appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
