It now officially has met that goal, becoming the first arena in the world to achieve that status, as certified by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). While original plans for a completely new arena under a historic roof in downtown Seattle didn’t have a bounty of striking sustainability aspects, when Amazon AMZN signed on as a venue sponsor and named the venue Climate Pledge Arena, the entire focus of the building shifted. The home of the then-to-come NHL’s expansion Seattle Kraken required major changes in building design to focus on the net zero carbon effort. All the natural gas piping was ripped out in favor of a 100% electric building, requiring the team to reinvent the way it planned to deliver food, heating, lights and cooling. The Kraken even had to figure out an electric Zamboni (along with all the building’s maintenance equipment turning electric). “One of the critical tenants of the certification,” Rob Johnson, Kraken’s vice president of sustainability, tells me, “is not using any fossil fuels in the building. During the global pandemic we redesigned the entire facility.” All energy used in Climate Pledge Arena is 100% electric.
