Couple live out dream life after selling home and buying $2.5 million cabin on cruise ship

For the vast majority of people when they think of retirement, they think of downsizing to a much smaller house.

Technically, you’d be right in saying Mike and Barbara Soroker from Florida have ‘downsized’.

The thing is, though; they’ve not downsized their house – they’ve spent $2.5 million buying a cabin on a cruise ship.

As ludicrous as that sounds, Mike, 80, and Barbara, 75, plan to live out their retirement on a cruise liner sailing around the world.

Who knew you could even live on a cruise ship?

Well, it transpires you can do just that, and the couple have put down a deposit for a cabin on a cruise ship that’s still under construction.

The pair will live aboard Storylines’s MV Narrative, an 18-deck shop featuring 450 crew, three swimming pools, a helipad, and even its own marina.

As for how that last one will work, who knows – but it sounds pretty impressive.

The cruise ship is enormous, measuring in at 741 feet long with a beam of 98 feet.

But in an unusual move, rather than operating the cruise ship in a traditional sense, the company is selling cabins and suites on the vessel.

These can either be for their own use, like with Mike and Barbara, or you could rent out yours to people as a mobile holiday let, with the lease on cabins lasting for the left of the vessel.

But, as you can imagine, it doesn’t come cheap.

The starting price is $590,000 for an internal cabin with no windows, only a ‘virtual’ window.

If you’re wanting a bit more space, you could go for a suite – but one of those will set you back a whopping $10 million, although it does have all the amenities.

According to Mike, it’ll be 2025 at the earliest when the cruise ship’s finished, but he does get monthly updates via Zoom on the vessel’s progress.
