Ex-hockey pro turned billionaire swaps $362M superyacht for Gates’ $650M Breakthrough

Former NHL star turned billionaire businessman Patrick Dovigi sold his superyacht Ahpo to get his hands on Bill Gates’ hydrogen-powered vessel Breakthrough.

Canadian Dovigi joined the National Hockey League as a goalie back in 1997. 

However, a decade on, he had a complete career change and is now the founder and CEO of Green For Life Environmental Inc. 

Now, he has an estimated net worth of around $1 billion and recently snapped up Bill Gates’ Breakthrough.

Billionaire Patrick Dovigi sold his superyacht for Breakthrough

Patrick Dovigi bought Ahpo in May 2023 for a whopping $362 million. 

But two years on, the vessel is headed for its new owner, with Dovigi selling the superyacht for a reported $370 million. 

The superyacht, which was originally owned by Michael Lee-Chin, had undergone a recent refit. 

It’s unclear who has bought Ahpo, but whoever it is has nabbed themselves a truly stunning superyacht boasting six decks, eight grand suites, a fully-fitted gym, beach club, and even its own IMAX cinema with a starlit ceiling. 

As you’d expect from a high-end yacht built by Lürssen, every detail has been carefully thought out, with hand-painted wallpapers, bespoke carpets, and exotic woods. 

According to reports, Dovigi made the decision to sell Ahpo so he could purchase Bill Gates’ hydrogen-powered Breakthrough.

Breakthrough was built by Feadship, the same team behind Steve Jobs’ $120 million superyacht, back in 2021, and was originally known simply as Project 821. 

Gates reportedly spent $645 million on this hydrogen yacht, which he later named Breakthrough. 

The vessel uses a liquid-hydrogen fuel cell, which is able to power its entire hotel load, which uses up around 70 percent of a yacht’s energy, and for low-speed cruising between harbors. 

To get his hands on the eco-friendly superyacht, Dovigi parted with a reported $650 million.

Bill Gates never set foot on the eco-yacht

Despite commissioning Breakthrough, it’s been reported that Gates never actually set foot on the yacht. 

The ship was launched in 2021, but for reasons unknown, Gates didn’t climb aboard.
