GM is bringing back America’s cheapest EV and adding some flair

General Motors is bringing America’s cheapest EV – the Chevrolet Bolt – back, and it’s expected to be as budget-friendly as the original.

The Chevrolet Bolt was released in 2016 and was the second best-selling plug-in car the following year. 

But in 2023, General Motors retired the nameplate.

Now, the EV is set to make a return with a new look and a low price tag.

America’s cheapest EV is making a comeback

Hailed as America’s cheapest EV, the Chevrolet Bolt was known for its affordable price tag starting at just $28,795.

So much so that reports at the time of its initial release claimed GM would make a loss of between $8,000 and $9,000 per Bolt sold. 

Its affordability paired with its reliability made it a popular EV, and there was a bit of an outcry when GM decided to give it the axe. 

Now, GM has done a U-turn and decided to bring the Chevrolet Bolt back for 2027 and has shared first-look images of the new model. 

The teaser photos don’t reveal the full EV, but GM has confirmed it will be getting a refresh with updates to the front fascia and rear tail lamps.

The images show new LED headlights at the front alongside a slim grille. 

The front bumper has been given a textural makeover and features a honeycomb cooling intake. 

It will also be getting a NACS charging adapter port and ‘some cool stuff’ that GM promises to unveil later down the line. 

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

Of course, with it being a relaunch of America’s cheapest EV, it’s also expected that the new model will come with a low price tag. 

Reports suggest that it could start at around $30,000 and head towards $35,000, depending on the trim and options.

If the reports surrounding its low price turn out to be accurate, the incoming Chevrolet Bolt could be a big hit, particularly with the price of EVs set to rise in the US after September due to the federal tax credit being scrapped.

Tesla’s more affordable EV has also been revealed

A reasonably priced Chevrolet Bolt could offer some serious competition for the upcoming more affordable Tesla model. 

Following months of speculation and rumor, the EV maker recently revealed that the first model has already been built, and volume production is on the way.

“We continue to expand our vehicle offering, including first builds of a more affordable model in June, with volume production planned for the second half of 2025,” Tesla said in a statement following the release of its Q2 financial results. 

As yet, Tesla hasn’t announced a price for the car.
