Appearing on today’s episode of “The Julia Cunningham Show” on Radio Andy, “The Valley” star Jesse Lally addressed the rumors that his castmate Janet Caperna fled the country to Switzerland due to intense online backlash.
“I love the ‘fled’ thing,” Lally said to host Julia Cunningham. “I will confirm this now. They called me — one of my best friends lives in Zurich — and they were talking about summer vacations, going to Switzerland, maybe Lake Como. I gave them recommendations. That was a planned vacation. That was much needed.”
The speculation around Janet’s whereabouts intensified after she deactivated her Instagram account amid reports of receiving death threats. But Jesse reiterated that the trip had long been in the works.
“Switzerland would be a good place to flee to,” he joked. “I mean, I would do that right now if I could.”
Jesse also opened up about the wave of toxic commentary directed at cast members of “The Valley” — a Bravo spinoff featuring familiar faces like Jax Taylor, Kristen Doute, and Scheana Shay — and acknowledged that Janet “is really getting it” from fans more than others.
“The only thing I’d ever seen is ‘Vanderpump [Rules]’ because I had a long relationship with Jax and I wanted to see what this was all about,” he said. “I know [Janet] is a fan of reality TV. I know everybody hears the stories. I had only met her because she was around at parties when I was with everyone.”
“Via Scheana,” Julia added. “That was her initial friend.”
Jesse then explained why he believes Janet gets more hate than her castmates and how it stems from unanswered questions and her approach to drama on the show.
“The thing about Janet, I think, the reaction from the crowd is, ‘What do we know about Janet and Jason? What made Jason choose the law? What is this story with Janet’s past marriage? Where did she come from?’ All of those questions we don’t know the answers to because it’s just constant sort of involving yourself in other storylines instead of creating your own storyline,” he said.
Referencing a controversial dinner scene at El Coyote, Lally said Janet inserted herself into drama that had little to do with her.
“People are really drilling her with that one, and it’s true,” Jesse explained. “She didn’t need to be involved in that conversation because she didn’t bring Jenna around. She was not part of the conversation that I had with Jenna at Kristen’s housewarming party. She wasn’t the person who brought Jenna to Field Day, but she was still involved in the conversation. That’s what people react to.”
Some critics have labeled Janet a “fan girl” who allegedly sought out Scheana to break into the Bravo social circle. But even that, Julia suggested, shouldn’t be a scandal: “The ‘fan girl’ thing I sort of give a pass to in a sense, because, I mean, ‘Vanderpump Rules’ had been on for a decade. To say that, like, ‘Well, she was a fan,’ I mean, that’s how James Kennedy has gotten girlfriends.”
“I was a fan of ‘Vanderpump,'” Jesse replied, noting that he and his wife had attended events and filmed with the original cast. “But it’s sort of that story that [Janet] actively sought out Scheana and then manipulated Scheana to get her [to be a] part of the group, and, yeah. I don’t know. I mean, I hate to say it, but it’s what we signed up for.”
“The Julia Cunningham Show” is a live, one-hour pop culture and entertainment show airing weekdays at 3pm ET/12pm PT from the SiriusXM LA Studios. Stream previous episodes anytime on the SiriusXM app.
