Lamborghini has abandoned current plans for an Urus EV in favor of something else

The CEO of Lamborghini says plans for an Urus EV have been pushed back in favor of its next-generation Lamborghini Urus which is due to arrive in 2029.

Lamborghini launched the V8-powered Urus back in 2017 and introduced the plug-in hybrid Urus SE last year.

The carmaker previously said it had been working on an all-electric version.

However, it seems the marque has made a U-turn on those plans.

The Lamborghini Urus EV might not appear until 2035

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the next-generation Urus would likely arrive in 2029, but an EV variant would not be available.

The announcement comes just weeks after Lamborghini said it planned to make gas-powered cars for ‘as long as possible’ and thinks ICE vehicles still have a lot of potential.

The marque had already pushed the launch of its first-ever production EV, the Lanzador, from 2028 to 2029.

And now the Urus EV is set for an even longer delay, with Winkelmann suggesting we might not see an EV version until 2035.

Instead, the next-generation Urus will stick with the plug-in hybrid powertrain.

“We want to have a new generation again as a plug-in hybrid,” he told Auto Car. “This is something very important for us and for the customers. And they were very happy to hear about this.”

The Lamborghini Urus SE is the fastest production SUV in the world, so it’ll be interesting to see how the carmaker builds on that for the upcoming model.

However, for now, Winklemann has remained tight-lipped on specs, so it seems as though we’ll have to wait and see.

Lamborghini wants to make gas-powered cars for as long as possible

Last month, and amongst what seems to be a growing trend with carmakers, Lamborghini announced it wasn’t ready to say goodbye to gas-powered engines just yet.

In an interview with Car Expert, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, said the marque was hoping to hold on to ICE vehicles for as long as it could.

“If you speak about the future of combustion for sure, for us, we are aiming to continue as long as possible,” Mohr said.

“We still think that we have a lot of ideas to transport, let me say, the combustion future.”

The launch date of the Lanzador EV has already been pushed back once, and Winklemann recently told Auto Car it could be further delayed.
