How far your car will go when it’s running on ’empty’?
Now, before we get too far into this, it’s important to point out that running your car while it’s very low on fuel can be bad for your car.
It can also be dangerous for you and other motorists if you happen to completely run out and stop dead while you’re on the road.
With that said, most of us can probably remember a time when we were out on the road and suddenly realized we were running seriously low on fuel.
You may have even wondered if you had enough left in the tank to get you safely to a gas station.
Well, the folks from YourMechanic crunched the data a few years back and created a chart that showed how far your car will go when it’s running on ’empty’.
The chart has a list of well-known makes and models, including the once best-selling Ford F-150, the Honda Accord, the Jeep Wrangler, and the Ford Mustang.
Alongside the list, there are a couple of columns showing how much gas is left when the low fuel warning is triggered, and how many miles are remaining when the warning light is illuminated.
Interestingly, most cars on the list are good for at least 35 miles once the warning light has flicked on, with a couple of exceptions, including the Chevy Silverado.
Some cars, like the Nissan Altima and Versa, have up to 100 miles left in the tank, while most sat between 35 miles and 70 miles.
However, the list was compiled back in 2015, so much of the data could be outdated.
Not only that, but how many miles you actually get will differ in real-life settings.
So, be safe rather than sorry, make sure you don’t let your car’s fuel tank dip too low before topping up.
Running on empty can damage your car
Driving while its running on empty, is probably something that most motorists try to avoid, and with good reason.
Not only is it incredibly risky, as your car might just stop running in the middle of the road, but it can also damage your car.
The bottom of your gas tank can pretty filthy, and you run the risk of pumping dirty gas into your engine if you let the fuel level drop too low.
Regularly running your tank too low could cause long-term damage to the gas tank and to your car as a whole.
