Meet the only DeLorean driving the boards of London’s West End
Instead of going back to the future, this DeLorean is going from the screen to the stage The post Meet the only DeLorean driving the boards of London’s West End appeared first on Supercar Blondie.

How do set designers and engineers turn the magic of the screen into the magic of the stage? Well, it’s time to meet the only DeLorean driving the boards of London’s West End and find out.
Supercar Blondie visited the musical production of the iconic cult classic Back to the Future in London’s West End and got to see everyone’s favorite duo ride in the most beloved car-turned-time machine ever.
The set designers, sound engineers, and prop designers use clever stage tricks, special effects, screens, and fire effects to recreate the magic of Doc and Marty’s DeLorean for a real-life audience – and they nail it.
It’s no small feat trying to bring one of the most recognizable movie cars ever to real life, and they even manage to nail not needing roads, too.

We recently visited a performance of Back to the Future: The Musical, currently showing at the Adelphi Theater in London’s West End.
By far, the most important part of the original movie that needs to be successfully translated to the stage is Doc Brown’s iconic DeLorean car/time machine.
And as it turns out, it takes a lot to turn a movie DeLorean into a stage car.
In the original movie, a real DeLorean was used as the basis for the time machine. But for the stage, the crew used a DeLorean-shaped shell on caster wheels with a screen overlay in front of it.
When Doc first shows up in his time machine, the audience goes crazy. It’s like the original is actually in the room with you, and despite the fact that the audience can’t see inside the car, it’s still incredibly detailed.
The main difference between the movie DeLorean and the stage DeLorean is the ‘flux capacitor’, which is removable, so that the audience can see it.
To actually travel through time, Marty and Doc need to get the car to reach 88 miles per hour.
Obviously, it would be impossible to have a car travel at 88 miles per hour on a stage. So, instead, the stage is moved around the car.
A sense of speed is created by combining video and lighting, and a revolutionary gaming engine to generate realistic car sounds based on the DeLorean’s position.
The audience couldn’t help but gasp at the end of the show when Doc declares that he and Marty don’t need roads and that flying cars are a real possibility when you go back to the future.
