North Dakota has just joined other American states by raising the interstate speed limit to 80MPH, up from 75MPH.
The state was one of the few that didn’t have its interstate limit at a higher speed. But the catch is that speeding fines have also increased.
North Dakota officials acknowledged that most people drive at 80 in a 75MPH zone, hence the increase in the speed limit.
The move also brings the state in line with South Dakota, meaning there is now consistency between the neighboring states.

Why North Dakota raised the interstate speed limit
The main reason for raising the speed limit comes from what the state found out about its drivers.
North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong said the bill acknowledges that most car drivers in the state go at 80MPH in 75MPH zones.
Then there’s the fact that South Dakota and Montana, the neighboring states to North Dakota, already have an 80MPH speed limit.
This new bill now establishes consistency between the three, and it passed on Friday, May 2nd.
Drivers will be happy about this move.
However, they won’t be happy about the increase in fines should they go over the new 80mph limit.
Fines for breaking the speed limit have increased
The state has increased the fines for speeding to coincide with the new speed limit.
Those speeding on roads of 65MPH or above will be charged $20 or $5 for every MPH over the limit.
For those speeding on roads with lower limits, the fines will be $20 or $3 for every MPH over the limit.
There are also fines for speeding in construction zones.
If you do so and there are workers present, you can be fined up to $150, an increase from the current $80.
A few other states, aside from the Dakotas and Montana also enforce an 80MPH limit on the interstates.
Some specific interstates in Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming also have 80MPH limits.
Currently, the United States’ highest speed limit is in Texas.
