This humanoid robot is being trained to fold laundry and do household chores

A humanoid robot that folds laundry, carries groceries, and chats like a housemate might sound like science fiction, but AI company 1X is making it a reality.

Their latest creation, NEO Gamma, is a next-generation home assistant designed to handle household chores with a touch of human-like charm.

It’s an upgraded version of their earlier prototype, NEO Beta, and comes packed with new features that make it more natural, useful, and interactive.

From its soft knit ‘clothing’ to its natural walking gait, NEO Gamma is built to fit seamlessly into home life.

The NEO Gamma is remarkably human-like

While humanoid robots are being developed in many countries across the globe, one of the NEO Gamma’s standout features is its ability to walk like a real person.

This humanoid robot uses motion data captured from human movement and reinforcement learning, in order to move with a smooth, human-like gait.

The NEO Gamma has the ability to squat, sit, and grasp objects, and can even perform natural arm swings.

It can relieve its owners of heavy grocery bags, bend down to pick up items from the floor, and even recognize furniture and fragile items in its environment to avoid bumping into them.

All of this is made possible through its 100Hz control system, a responsive design that gives it a wide, flexible range of motion.

Not your traditional humanoid robot

Robots these days come in all shapes and sizes, but visually, NEO Gamma also breaks away from traditional robotic design.

Wrapped in a 3D-printed soft nylon knit suit made using a Japanese Shimaseki machine, the robot looks ‘clothed’ rather than mechanical.

This not only gives it a more approachable, human feel, but also cushions its body to reduce accidental damage to furniture or home décor.

Its ears are fitted with Emotive Ear Rings that glow when it’s actively listening, adding an extra layer of expressiveness to its appearance.

On the tech side, the humanoid robot features an in-house AI language model that enables natural conversations, with no buttons or wake words required.

It has four microphones with echo cancellation for crisp voice capture, and three speakers strategically placed around its body to handle dialogue, music, and immersive sound effects.

Plus, 1x has managed to reduce the robot’s noise level by 10dB, making it quieter than a humming fridge.

NEO Gamma is still undergoing internal testing, but its development signals a shift in how we might interact with robots at home.

Of course, given how a humanoid robot recently sparked safety concerns after it lashed out in mid-air, perhaps some time is needed before robots are commonplace in households. The post This humanoid robot is being trained to fold laundry and do household chores appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
