As Chinese EVs are becoming increasingly threatening to the US market, this American has fallen in love with a $32,000 electric sports car, the BYD YangWang U9, that made him feel something he’s never felt before.
With Tesla in freefall worldwide, BYD has come crashing through the market’s front door and dominated sales across Europe.
But it’s the standard and practical models that are doing the heavy lifting.
That’s why it comes as quite a surprise that the BYD YangWang U9 is actually a $32,000 electric sports car that blows people away. It’s even said to be better than a Toyota Supra.

American man falls in love with Chinese electric sports car
Ever since it was announced, the BYD YangWang U9 was tipped to be a magnificent electric sports car that could rival the likes of the Model S Plaid and the Lucid Air…
And all for the modest price of just $32,000.
It quickly gained mainstream traction by performing dance moves and bunny-hopping over potholes, thanks to a wild party trick feature.
But was it all flair and no care? Or was it actually a sports car that could be a revelation?
Well, YouTube personality Wheelsboy has just given viewers a run-through, and it’s safe to say that he is sold.
The YouTuber gave us a neat tour of the electric sports car, which does look impressive with its Supra-like exterior.
But it’s the driving that truly blew him away.
The race-ready car might not be a commuter’s dream, with harsh acceleration. But for anyone with a need for speed, it was frightening to find such a motor in a $32k car.
How great can the BYD YangWang U9 become?
So, it clearly looks great and feels great. But how does the YangWang U9 stand out from the crowd of sports cars such as those from Porsche, Dodge, Chevrolet, and more?
Well, it’s one-fifth of the price of the speedy Corvette ZR1. And it’s actually more powerful and quicker than the new Chevrolet supercar.
Its legacy will likely be that it’s the cheapest sports car ever to surpass 200mph. So, for anyone slugging along the motorway in a similarly priced Honda Accord, it might be time to reassess your options.
“[It’s] an electric sports car that weighs as much as a Porsche Cayman, costs as much as a Honda Accord, and performs like a Ferrari,” the YouTuber said.
And that’s why the Chinese EV market is so hot right now.
