BMW hits major 3,000,000 milestone in its EV production journey that started in 2013

BMW has officially passed the three million mark in EV production, a milestone that includes 1.5 million battery-electric units and highlights the growth of the BMW electric cars division.

The landmark vehicle, a BMW 330e Touring, was built in Munich and sent to a customer in the UK.

Just days earlier, the 1.5 millionth fully electric model, a MINI Countryman E, left the production line in Leipzig.

Together, they mark over a decade of momentum that started with the BMW i3 in 2013.

Leipzig and Munich mark turning points in EV production

BMW’s shift toward electrification was not sudden.

It was built on consistent steps, beginning with the BMW i3 in Leipzig.

That plant would later introduce the brand’s first plug-in hybrid, the BMW i8, before evolving into a fully flexible facility that now builds combustion, plug-in, and battery-electric vehicles side by side.

Leipzig also produces high-voltage batteries and serves as a key site for BMW’s evolving electric architecture.

Munich’s role has steadily grown as well.

The plant is now equipped to handle multiple drivetrain types and recently produced the 3,000,000th electrified vehicle in BMW’s history.

Dingolfing, Regensburg, and other German sites are similarly outfitted, supporting battery systems and drivetrain modules for BMW electric cars across the product lineup.

Outside Germany, the network is expanding to match demand.

MINI’s Oxford facility continues to produce the Cooper SE, while China’s Shenyang plant handles production of the iX3.

Upcoming sites in the US and Mexico are being prepped for full-scale battery-electric output starting in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

Together, these locations support BMW’s commitment to balancing regional production with international delivery targets.

BMW preparing to launch new electric drive system

Electrification at BMW now goes beyond the vehicles themselves.

Production of fifth-generation battery systems is active in several locations, including Dingolfing and Spartanburg, with Leipzig recently added to the list.

The company is also preparing to launch its sixth-generation electric drive system, starting with the next-gen BMW iX3 on the Neue Klasse platform.

BMW electric cars are now central to its global strategy.

In Q1 2025, the company sold 109,513 battery-electric vehicles across its BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands.

That figure marks a 32.4 percent increase over the same period last year.

Battery-electric models made up three-quarters of all electrified vehicles BMW delivered during that time.

BMW has maintained a clear direction with EV production while avoiding overpromising.

It continues to scale its output in step with demand and has invested in flexible manufacturing that reduces downtime and maximizes plant efficiency.

With battery-electric cars now defining the majority of its electrified output, BMW is positioned to move forward with a model lineup shaped by efficiency, adaptability, and long-term technical development.
