BMW is making a beautiful looking all-electric station wagon

BMW has confirmed it’s making a ‘touring’ or station wagon version of its upcoming eighth-generation 3 Series sedan, and it set to be unveiled ‘pretty soon’.

The all-electric next-gen 3 Series will bring the revival of the i3 name. 

The upcoming car is set to be available as either an EV or an ICE-powered vehicle. 

And BMW design boss Adrian van Hooydonk has said that a station wagon version is also on the cards.

BMW says station wagons are making a comeback

BMW’s redesigned 3 Series is expected to be the second of the marque’s Neue Klasse generation of battery-powered vehicles. 

Although the car will be available with either an electric or gas powertrain, the architecture that underpins the new vehicle was designed for EVs. 

The first launch will be the iX3 SUV, but van Hooydonk has suggested that a ‘touring’ version is set to be released – and sooner than you might expect. 

The designer said that the success of its M3 and M5 Touring had shown that there’s still a strong interest in station wagons.

“I think the ‘touring’ is making a comeback,” he told Autocar. 

“Of course, we’ve propelled it with the M3 Touring and M5 Touring: they seem to be very popular, even in countries where tourings or estates are traditionally not very [popular].

“So yes, there is new wind in that segment, and we’re very happy about that.”

The new vehicle will revive the i3 nameplate

As yet, no launch date has been revealed, but it’s thought that the new car will land around the same time as the iX3 is unveiled at the Munich motor show in September. 

Van Hooydonk said following the launch of the iX3 in September ‘pretty soon after we will come with our new interpretation of a sporty sedan; we believe that segment is not dead’. 

He said that half of BMW’s business was SUVs while the other half was ‘sporty, elegant sedans or coupes’. 

BMW has recently confirmed that it will be sticking with its i branding for its EVs.

So the 3 Series EV will see the reintroduction of the i3 name, which was last used back in 2022. 

BMW product boss Bernd Körber told Autocar that the i badge represents electrification for the marque.
