Important things to know before buying an EV
Buying a new car is a major decision, often with a large cost, so it doesn’t pay to rush in.
Just look what happened when these guys bought the cheapest Porsche Cayman in the world sight unseen and ended up with a disaster on their hands.
However, to try and avoid landing yourself in a similar spot, car dealer and YouTuber EV Auto Alex has shared nine questions to ask before buying an EV.
First off: ‘Does the car have enough range?’ Consider how much you’ll use your car, and then look for a model that offers you enough range between charges for your needs.
Next up: ‘Can I charge it at home?’ While EVs can be slowly charged at home with a standard outlet, you might want to consider installing a fast charger, but beware of the additional costs.
Thirdly: ‘How much does electricity cost?’ An important question for anyone making the switch from ICE to EV, not least so you can keep track of how much you’re saving.
Next question: ‘Are there public charging stations nearby?’ You’ve probably heard of range anxiety, well, you can help combat it by making sure you know where your nearest charging stations are.
On to number five: ‘Can I take my EV on road trips?’ Similar to the point above, make sure that before you consider heading off on any trips, you know where charging stations are on your route.
Number six: ‘What EV incentives are available?’ Some of these vary from state to state and can save you a whole lot of cash if you know what to do.
Next up: ‘Should I buy used or new?’ This question isn’t really specific to EVs, but, generally speaking, electric cars depreciate quicker than gas-powered cars, so maybe you can get a good deal.
Eighth on the list: ‘What do I need to know about EV maintenance?’ Much like their ICE siblings, EVs need regular maintenance and care, so make sure you know what to expect.
Finally: ‘How much does it cost to insure?’ This one speaks for itself, but it’s worth shopping around to find the best deal.
