Ex-Tesla employees are turning a career curveball into a bold new chapter with the launch of a startup called Hubber.
After Elon Musk abruptly shut down Tesla’s Supercharger division in May 2024, many wondered where that talent would land.
As it turns out, at least three veterans of the world-renowned charging network decided not to leave EVs behind.
Instead, they decided to join together to tackle one of the biggest gaps in electric mobility: city charging.

Ex-Tesla employees turned rivals
The brains behind the operation are three ex-Tesla employees: Harry Fox, Hugh Leckie, and Connor Selwood.
The trio were instrumental in rolling out Tesla’s Supercharger networks across the UK and Ireland.
When their time at Tesla was up, they took their insider knowledge and applied it to a fresh idea: ultra-rapid charging stations designed specifically for urban environments.
Their mission is both simple and ambitious.
“We believe that abundant ultra-rapid charging in cities will unlock mass market adoption of EVs,” they said on their website.
With Tesla’s Supercharger network still leading the pack in the US, Hubber may not make much headway in Tesla’s home turf for the time being.
However, given that the new company is launching in the UK, perhaps there’s room for them to grow, especially since more miles are covered in EVs than gas-powered cars in the UK.
Going head-to-head with the Tesla Diner concept
But how exactly do they plan to pull this off, and what’s the difference between their venture and the Tesla Supercharger?
Well, Hubber is planning to go beyond just setting up more plugs in the ground.
Instead, they’re imagining destination-style charging hubs packed with features.
Renderings show solar-paneled rooftops, sleek retail units, vending machines, restrooms, and even dedicated fleet charging areas.
In other words, a charging station where you actually want to spend a little time.
It’s a stark contrast to Tesla’s latest venture, the buzzy new West Hollywood diner with 80 Supercharger stalls and a side of spectacle.
While Tesla leans into neon nostalgia and spaceship vibes, Hubber is focusing on practicality, comfort, and scale.
The Tesla Dinner recently opened to much fanfare, with customers praising the presentation of their burgers, and the fact that the company covers gratuity for their staff.
However, there might be trouble in paradise, as the establishment recently trimmed its menu after a chaotic opening. The post Ex-Tesla employees whose entire department was fired at once join forces to create brand new company appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
