Ferrari gets Testarossa naming rights back

Ferrari has recently won an enormous legal battle over one of its most iconic names.

A few years ago, the legendary Testarossa name became the subject of a lot of controversy.

The name has lain dormant since production ended in 1996.

And a German toy company saw a potentially lucrative opportunity.

Autec AG wanted to use the moniker for its own series of toys.

It also happened to very much not want to have to pay a licensing fee to Ferrari.

So Autec went to court and argued for the rights to use the famous model name.

It argued that, because the name hadn’t been used for five or more years, Ferrari had no rights to it.

Surprisingly, the court agreed – and in 2017, the Italian marque lost the rights to its iconic model name.

The decision was then confirmed by a court of the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Yesterday, however, saw a massive reversal in the fortunes of Ferrari.

The EU General Court reversed the previous decisions and gave the name back to the supercar maker.

A big reason for this is down to the fact that Ferrari offers the resale of vintage Testarossa cars.

Furthermore, the marque produces genuine parts for and also authenticates those cars.

Based on that, the court found that the moniker has been in general use by Ferrari.

Therefore, the name still belongs to the marque.

Testarossa remains an icon of icons

The Italian automaker was very much at the forefront of the car industry of the 1980s.

In an era that saw cars such as the Lamborghini Countach and the Audi Quattro, Ferrari still endured.

And 1984 would see the marque create its masterclass.

The Ferrari Testarossa would serve as the successor to the Berlinetta Boxer.

It very quickly became one of the most iconic cars from the 1980s.

Don Johnson famously drove a white version in the legendary TV show, Miami Vice.

Even today, it’s considered one of the most legendary cars ever built.

And now, the marque has the name rights to its car back where they belong. The post Ferrari just won a major legal battle over its legendary Testarossa name appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
