Florida-based restoration guru, Samcrac, has been forced into ripping his $15K Corvette Z06 apart after finding metal shards in its engine, and the car’s past turned out to be more work than he’d bargained for.

The Corvette Z06 is one of the finest sports cars to come out of America.

But this particular car was rather poorly,

In fact, its front end was smashed to pieces, and the engine was spitting out bits of metal, leaving instant regret on its new owner’s face.

Florida YouTuber finds more than he bargained for

Popular restoration wizard and YouTube personality Samcrac took a huge ‘gamble’ on an ‘already rebuilt‘ Corvette Z06, landing the car for a steal but also inheriting some rather brutal problems.

After buying the car and fixing one connection issue to get the car alive, the Florida man was quickly met with waves of bad news.

To begin with, plastic and metal shards were falling out of the engine in every crevice.

But while many people assumed this was a write-off, he was more optimistic and ripped the Corvette engine open.

Metal shards are not meant to come out of an engine

In the most recent upload to his channel, Samcrac enlisted the help of a fellow creator-turned-mechanic to help identify where the metal shards were coming from.

Fortunately, it was evident that it wasn’t the bearings problem that many commenters assumed. In fact, the oil was clear and healthy, and there were no further shavings like it.

However, the ‘sloppy’ work from the restoration artist who previously owned the vehicle was found to be dangerous, with loose bolts on the crank pulley.

Upon further inspection, another metal shard that matched the first one was found next to the bolt.

His fellow mechanic then confirmed that it was actually part of a rare friction washer, used in LS7 engines only, which can be expensive to replace. That’s if it hadn’t already been discontinued.

Considering the recent Corvette Z06 features an LT6 5.5-L engine, inspired by the Ferrari 458, it’ll certainly be a tough cookie to replace.

This was the reason that the bolts were loose, as the single-use part had been sneakily re-used and ‘falied catastrophically’.

The Corvette will run again… Maybe

Now, the engine appears to be free of issues. Which just leaves the aesthetic replacements and markup left for this Corvette Z06 restoration.

In its prime, the Corvette Z06 is a beautiful beast. So if this restoration project can be completed without significant expense now, it’ll have been an absolute bargain. The post Florida man looks inside $15K Corvette engine, discovers more about the car’s past than he bargained for appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
