Man is new owner of James May’s worst ever The Grand Tour car as he explains what it’s like to drive

A British YouTuber and Redditor is now the owner of James May’s worst-ever The Grand Tour car, a Crosley CC Convertible, as he explains what the classic car is like to drive.

In a The Grand Tour special, the three presenters each chose an unlikely car for an unlikely road trip.

Jeremy Clarkson picked a Mitsuoka Le-Seyde, Richard Hammond a Chevrolet SSR, and May bought a Crosley CC convertible.

This was a nightmare car for May, as it was slow, unreliable, and underpowered. It even prompted him to tow it around for most of the trip using the backup car!

How the YouTuber bought The Grand Tour car

YouTuber Zach Ascot posted a video on how he got his hands on the car.

He confirms it is the actual car from the special, and said he saw it in an Instagram post for Hammond’s workshop, ‘The Smallest Cog’.

A friend of Zach’s knows someone at the garage.

She put in a word for him, saying that he wanted to buy the car.

After being put in touch with the owner at the time, he was able to make an offer.

Soon enough, it was his!

The Crosley CC Convertible is from 1947, and has just 26.5hp, with a lightweight engine and a sleek body.

Mod-cons are on the low side, with a flap for cabin cooling, two dials on the front, and, amazingly, it has back seats.

What is the Crosley like to drive?

The idea behind the car was to offer something smaller and cheaper to road users, versus the bigger cars appearing in America at the time.

Driving it, Zach says, is a lot of effort to go very slowly.

With every junction, you have to come to a complete stop as there is no synchro-mesh on the gears.

The Crosley tilts through the corners because of its lightness.

The indicators don’t cancel out when you turn the steering wheel back.

Of course, with so little power, you can’t go very fast, so Zach doesn’t take the car onto the freeway.

He did think it was fun, but only if you stick to really quiet roads.

While it’s clearly a bit of a scary experience, it’s nice to see that James May’s car has found a good home. The post Man is new owner of James May’s worst ever The Grand Tour car as he explains what it’s like to drive appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
