Hours before kick-off in Yorkshire, news broke that the man whose statue stands outside Old Trafford and for so long was the embodiment of the club itself had died. When a sporting legend passes away it is easy to get caught up in the emotion and over-emphasise their impact. In death, greatness can be oversized, but with Sir Bobby this is impossible. He was the bridge between each chapter of Manchester United’s modern history and a force in creating legendary success three times over. Emerging as a precocious talent in the 1950s, Sir Bobby was one of the so-called Busby Babes; a group of youngsters coached by Sir Matt Busby who won the league title and were expected to dominate for years. The tragedy was they never did because the majority of the team was killed in a plane crash as they embarked on their first European campaign in Munich. Sir Bobby was one of the few who survived and, in the years that followed, became a key part of the legendary 1960s team that succeeded the Babes’ and achieved remarkable success.
