Matchbox Twenty lead singer Rob Thomas appeared on today’s episode of “Page Six Radio” and recalled his drunk karaoke nights with Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe years ago.
“Back in the day, there was a place called the Elbow Room that used to have karaoke night on like a Monday,” Rob said. “But it would be me and Adam [Duritz] from Counting Crows and Michael Stipe and all of these people just drunk and doing karaoke and doing each others songs. I don’t think you’ve lived until you’ve got a drunk Adam Duritz doing ‘Back 2 Good’ at your favorite place.”
During the show, Rob also discussed his upcoming tour and (hilariously) shared how writing “Smooth” – his GRAMMY-winning smash hit with Santana from 1999 – was a “mistake” because fans frequently say one of its memorable lyrics in a “rapey tone.”
“I made the mistake of writing ‘Smooth.’” “I say this because I love that song and I love everything that’s happened about it, but the downside of it is that means that at least once every few months, somebody goes, ‘Man, it’s a hot one.’ And they always say it in that rapey tone.”
