Six years and 85,000 miles after paying $40k for Tesla Model 3 this man shared the true cost of ownership

A man who has owned his Tesla Model 3 for six years and put 85,000 miles on the clock has revealed the true cost of ownership.

He bought the Tesla Model 33 brand-new in 2019 for $40,000.

Over the last six years, the EV has been his daily driver, and he’s racked up around 85,000 miles.

He decided to do a six-year check-in to work out exactly how much running the car has cost him during that time.

Breaking down the true cost of ownership after six years

Now that EVs are becoming more and more common, we’re seeing plenty of folks who are keen to reveal how much their car has cost – or saved – them as well as how they’re holding up.

One guy managed to put more than a million miles on his Tesla, and shared details about how the batteries coped, while this guy explained how buying a Cybertruck left him out of pocket

Fellow Tesla owner and YouTuber ZachOnTheCharge shared a video back in March highlighting the true cost of ownership of his Model 3.

He bought the Tesla Model 3 for $40,000 in 2019, and despite clocking up 85,000 miles, the battery has held up pretty well and is currently sitting at 88 percent of its original capacity.

Next up, he spoke about the Model 3’s energy consumption, explaining that he gets around one mile per 250 watts, and that it costs around 14 cents per kWh to charge it at home.

Crunching the numbers, Zach said he gets about 91 miles of range for the same price as a gallon of gas.

Aside from fuelling his car, Zach has also bought a set of tires after hitting 55,000 miles and said he expected the replacement set to give similar mileage to his original ones.

The Model 3 also had to have its 12-volt battery replaced after five years, which cost Zach $114.

All in all, Zach says the running and maintenance costs were cheap and that it still feels like he’s driving a new car even after six years. What more can you ask for?

Are EVs cheaper to run?

While electric cars tend to cost more upfront than their gas-powered counterparts, most experts agree that over the lifetime of the car, the true cost of ownership is less.

EVs have much cheaper running costs and are often cheaper and easier to maintain.  YouTube Video

A study from 2024 found that EV owners could save as much as $10,000 over a seven-year period, compared to an ICE equivalent vehicle.

You may also be able to offset some of the initial cost of the vehicle with a tax credit, although if you live in the US, this is coming to an end soon.
