Tesla launches long-promised EV charging station of the future and it’s awesome

Tesla has finally launched its Oasis Supercharger – the EV charging station of the future, and it’s unlike any other Supercharger station out there.

The new Oasis Supercharger has partially opened up in Lost Hills, California.

Once fully opened, it will be the biggest Supercharger in the world and is the first of its kind.

The station comes with its own solar farm and can operate completely off-grid.

Introducing Oasis Supercharger – the EV charging station of the future

Back when Tesla began to roll out its Supercharging stations across the US, the company had said it would add solar panels and batteries, and that some stations would be able to run off-grid.

Since then, although Tesla has done an incredible job of building Supercharger stations up and down the US, to date, none of them have been given off-grid capabilities.

However, in October, Tesla announced its ‘Oasis’ project that appeared to put those earlier plans into action.

Now, Tesla has partially opened up the Supercharger, which will one day be the biggest in the world.

The first phase, which is now open to the public, includes 84 charging stalls powered entirely by the sun and operated off-grid.

By the time its finished, the Oasis Supercharger will be home to a whopping 168 stalls and will be mostly powered by solar panels and Megapack energy storage batteries, but there’s also a 1.5-MW grid connection.

The solar farm covers 30 acres of land and consists of 11 MW of ground-mounted solar panels and canopies.

To ensure it can still charge your EV even after sundown, the Oasis Supercharger will use 10 Megapack batteries that hold enough power to charge around 1,000 electric cars per day, without having to use the backup grid.

BYD is charging ahead when it comes to EV charging

While Tesla may have just unveiled its first EV charging station of the future, over in China we’re seeing some truly next-generation technology.

Carmaker BYD has launched its Super e-Platform that offers 1,000kW peak charging speeds, which is double Tesla’s 500kW Superchargers.

This means an EV can gain around 250 miles of range in just five minutes of charging.

That’s 1.2 miles per second of charge, which is about as fast as filling up a gas tank.

“In order to completely solve our users’ charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refueling time of petrol vehicles,” BYD founder Wang Chuanfu said.
