Tesla Model Y has hit the Indian market at a much higher starting price than in America

The Tesla Model Y has hit the Indian market, but it comes with a significantly higher price than you’d expect to pay in other countries, including the US.

The EV maker opened up its first Indian showroom at the Bandra Kurla Complex business center, in Mumbai, on Tuesday, June 15.

First deliveries in India are tipped to begin in the third quarter of the year.

But those hoping to get their hands on one will be expected to part with quite a lot more than buyers outside of India.

The Model Y has launched with a much higher price tag

News of Tesla heading to India was confirmed earlier this year, when the EV maker began recruiting to fill numerous roles, including specialists to help build new charging stations in the country

This week, the first of its showrooms opened its doors in Mumbai and the Tesla Model Y has hit the Indian market.

However, the EV has a significant markup compared to its price in the US.

The standard Model Y will set you back around $70,000, while the long-range comes with a price tag of about $79,100.

The prices include tariffs and state-imposed levies, but the EV maker hasn’t shared an official price breakdown on its website.

The figure is a lot more than you’d pay in the US, where the Model Y has a starting price of $44,990, before any federal tax credits; in China, where it costs $36,700; and in Germany, where you can buy a Model Y for $53,700.

Its price point will see the Tesla Model Y compete with the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Kia.

What’s next now the Tesla Model Y has hit the Indian market?

The company has big plans for India, revealing it is planning a second showroom in New Delhi and introducing several Superchargers throughout Mumbai and New Delhi.

“We are here to create the ecosystem, to invest in the necessary infrastructure, including the charging infrastructure,” regional director at Tesla Isabel Fan told Reuters.

“We are building from 0 to 100. It will take time to cover the whole country.”

Tesla boss Elon Musk has previously said he would like to open a factory in India, which would remove tariffs and slash prices.

But for now, the Teslas on sale in India will be imported.
