The story of the American who put over 3 million miles on a Volvo is legendary.

Irv Gordon bought himself a Volvo back on June 30th, 1966.

The American would go on to put over 3 million miles on the car during his lifetime.

Before he passed, Gordon cheekily offered to sell it back to the brand – for $1 per mile.

“I offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile”

American Irv Gordon earned himself a bit of a legendary reputation in the car world.

The New York native, a high school teacher, bought himself a Volvo P1800 back in June 1966.

For 52 years, Gordon maintained and drove his now-iconic P1800.

In the course of ownership, Gordon drove over 3 million miles.

But there is a part of the story that is as hilarious as it is unknown.

Back in 2016, Irv Gordon sat down with the New York Post for an interview.

It was that interview that really shed light on the incredible story.

And it’s one particular part of the story that is genuinely funny.

When Volvo got wind of the 3 million-mile milestone, Gordon offered to sell it back to them.

“I offered it to Volvo for $1 a mile,” the New York native laughed.

“Obviously, they didn’t take me up on it.”

Gordon’s P1800 passes 3 million mile mark

Despite Volvo’s polite refusal, they were extremely impressed by Gordon’s careful ownership.

In fact, Volvo gifted Irv Gordon a new car back in 1987 to celebrate the first million-mile mark.

Gordon ended up driving 450,000 miles on that new 780 Coupe before selling it.

But it was the P1800 that was always the apple of Irv Gordon’s eye.

Back when he bought the car for $4,150, he returned after the first weekend for its first service.

Gordon had spent those two days driving over 1,500 miles in his brand-new car.

By 2013, Irv finally hit the 3 million mile record in his still-original car from 1966.

In fact, Irv was officially acknowledged with the Guinness World Record for most miles driven in an original car.

Irv sadly passed away in November of 2018 after 52 years of ownership.

When he passed, the odometer of his P1800 came in at 3,260,257 miles driven.

In a touching tribute, the company offered to take over ownership of Irv’s P1800.

And the company still regularly drives the car – honoring a wonderful legacy. The post The American who put over 3 million miles on a Volvo offered to sell it back to Volvo for $1 a mile, but they refused appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
