The Nissan R33 GT-R LM was so rare that no one was allowed to drive it.

Not even the CEO of the company.

It was created as a homologation car, and it is still the rarest car Nissan ever built.

And there’s a reason why.

Why this Nissan is so rare

In 1995, the R32 Skyline GT-R was so dominant in Australian Touring Car Championship events that it was essentially ‘kicked out’ of competition, which is not unheard of, as wild as it sounds.

The governing body changed the rules to favor naturally aspirated engines, which the R32 didn’t have, and that threw a sizable wrench into the works for the R32.

As a result, the Japanese automaker decided to create a new GT-R, this time based on the R33, for the GT1 championship.

As always, Nissan knew it needed to create a homologation model, a strict requirement when it comes to so many racing series including GT1 events, and so it did.

They created… one.

Only one.

It was inspired by the GT1-spec 1995 Nissan R33 GT-R LM, but it shared very little in common with the track-only car.

Nissan never intended to sell it, and now it lives in a museum.

The car was so rare that even the then CEO and Chairman of the company, Carlos Ghosn, reportedly wasn’t allowed to drive it.

What’s next for the GT-R

Nissan said it was going to replace the old GT-R supercar with a new electric model years ago, but that never happened.

Fast-forward to a few years later, in 2025, and Nissan confirmed once again a new GT-R is coming, even though no one knows what it’s going to look like.

With a bit of luck, the new GT-R will be inspired by the Hyper Force, pictured below, a concept car that produces over 1,300HP.

With even more luck, it will use some form of internal combustion along with its electric powertrain.

Speaking at the launch event for 13 new cars earlier this year, Ivan Espinosa, the newly-appointed Nissan CEO, said a new GT-R will come.

“It’s in our DNA. I can’t tell you when or how, but the GT-R name will exist in the future,” he said.

So let’s wait and see.

And keep our fingers crossed. The post The rarest Nissan ever made is so exclusive it’s said even the CEO wasn’t allowed to touch it appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
