An American couple who bought a Tesla Model Y and Model 3 have shared the impact the EVs have had on their energy bills.
We’re currently seeing more and more motorists making the switch from gas-powered cars to EVs.
One of the selling points for EVs, of course, is the promise of cheaper fuel bills.
But how does it actually stack up in real life?

What your energy bill can reveal
Thankfully, there are plenty of folks out there who are willing to share details, like this guy who broke down his electricity bill after installing a charger in his home, or this man who shared the real cost of running his Model 3 for six years.
The man behind the Mac’s Tech Toy Box YouTube channel also revealed the impact of running two EVs – his Tesla Model Y and his wife’s Tesla Model 3 LR – on their energy bill.
Mac then shared that across five months prior to owning their EVs, the energy bill averaged $225 per month.
The EV owner said he and his wife clock around 500 miles a week, with Mac charging his vehicle five to six times a week, and his wife a little less.
So, you’d assume the bill would go up, right? Wrong.
“The bill actually went down – $214, down from the $225 that it was prior which is interesting,” Mac said in the clip from 2022.
Of course, there’s a caveat.
The figure above is from February to June, when the couple uses their air conditioning much less, and it was also before Mac’s wife had bought her EV, so there was only his Tesla Model Y being charged.
However, looking at the couple’s more recent bill, which was during the summer and covering both their vehicles’ charging, the total was still only $267.32.
“Ok, so that’s quite an increase from the $214 with just me, but only slightly more expensive than that average of $225 from before I got any electric vehicle,” he commented.
The EV owner went on to tell anyone who was concerned about a bill increase after purchasing a Tesla not to worry about it.
Is it cheaper to run an EV?
Whether it’s actually cheaper to run an EV over a gas-powered vehicle is a question that’s been bounced back and forth for years.
Electric cars tend to cost more upfront, but have much cheaper fuel costs, and, depending on where you live, you may be able to claim a tax credit.
A study from 2024 found that EV owners could save as much as $10,000 over a seven-year period, compared to an ICE equivalent vehicle. The post US couple bought a Tesla each and drove 500 miles a week only to be left in shock when comparing energy bills appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
