Despite only just going on sale earlier this month, ‘used’ Xiaomi YU7 cars are appearing on sale, $2,800 above Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, or MSRP, as a 60-week delivery wait begins.

Xiaomi hit it out of the park with its first foray into car manufacturing, having pivoted from tech to create the YU7.

But having built a magnificent reputation, the launch of the YU7 has attracted controversy.

Now, despite over a year left until the car ships, people are already selling off ‘used’ Xiaomi YU7 cars.

Xiaomi YU7 is being sold in ‘used’ condition… but it doesn’t arrive for over a year

The Chinese tech giants stepping into car manufacturing is like seeing Apple’s car come to fruition.

But while the American company licks its wounds at its failed $10 billion project, the Chinese equivalent has become one of the leading EV makers in the world.

So much so that the upcoming Xiaomi YU7 sold over 200,000 units in three minutes.

Now, the car is being found on second-hand sites claiming to be used.

But it isn’t even out yet, and won’t be for another 60 weeks.

As reported by Easy Money, there are currently nearly 80 Xiaomi YU7 cars listed online, the cheapest of which comes $2,700 over the recommended ticket price

The standard version is still expected to ship in 58-60 weeks, as per the Xiaomi app.

Others have found up to $15,000 more expensive than the retail price, especially the Pro and Max versions, which will be shipped first, some 15 weeks prior to the standard YU7.

But there is a reason for these early sales: scalpers.

Scalpers, no scalping

Shortly after reaching the flabbergasting 200,000 sales mark in a matter of minutes, CEO Lei Jun admitted that many of the orders were likely from scalpers, and the company had to limit its sales per person.

With that, the company expected a number of second-hand Xiaomi YU7 cars to appear on trading platforms.

Now, it seems that the prediction is ringing true.

Many companies have faced similar issues with highly anticipated cars.

Which is why the Tesla Cybertruck comes with a guarantee that the car cannot be sold within the first 12 months – a ban that, coincidentally, was lifted this month for many owners.

While this is commonplace for some supercars, even being one of the seven commandments in owning a Ferrari, Xiaomi might not have been expecting such a reaction to its new car.

It’s a lesson learned, hopefully.
