Woman who won Volkswagen Beetle on Oprah Show opens up about the experience

An American woman who won a Volkswagen Beetle as an audience member for The Oprah Winfrey Show has spoken about her experience and revealed if she got to keep the car.

The woman, who posts on TikTok under the name AlwaysCandid, was in the audience of the popular chat show back in 2010. 

The show she appeared on happened to be a Christmas special, and during the recording, Oprah handed out a whopping 275 brand-new Volkswagen Beetles to the audience. 

More than a decade on, one lucky winner has shared her experience of snagging a free car.

In a series of posts uploaded to her TikTok channel, AlwaysCandid gave a candid retelling of exactly what went down when she won the car back in 2010. 

She revealed the taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show took around two-and-a-half hours, and alongside handing out cars, Oprah gifted other items from her list of ‘favorite things’, which included clothing, high-end cookware, and an iPad. 

The cars were offered in either red, light blue, yellow, or silver, with this particular winner opting for bright red. 

After finding out they were getting a brand new car, the winning audience members were told they would need to wait around to speak to The Oprah Winfrey Show’s lawyers, as, unlike earlier giveaways on the show, this time it would be stumping up the cost of the taxes for the prizes.  

Not bad, right?

The winners had to wait about a year or so after the taping to pick up their new Volkswagen Beetle from a local dealership. 

But they did eventually get them.

In a follow-up clip she shared back in 2023, the TikToker responded to a question from one follower who asked if she still has the car. 

And, all these years later, she said she did still have the car.

In the clip, she went out to her garage where she revealed the shiny red VW Beetle. 

“It is still so pretty, I mean I’ve got a couple of little dents and stuff where I’ve run into things, but I still have the car,” she said. 

“It still runs great. Still pretty as ever. It has 130,000 miles on it in 11 years. Not too shabby. It’s beautiful.”
