YouTuber invents omnidirectional bike that moves on spheres which balances and drifts perfectly in any direction

A YouTuber has created this unique omnidirectional bike that uses spheres in place of regular wheels so it can balance and drift in any direction.

YouTuber James Bruton from the UK spent a couple of months working on the unusual bike. 

He documented the process on his YouTube channel, where it’s pulled in millions of views. 

And the omnidirectional bike has managed to firmly divide opinions, with some asking ‘why?’ and others asking ‘why not?’

The omnidirectional bike is a drifting machine

Every so often, an adventurous and inquisitive mind will ask ‘what if?’ 

Like, the man who asked ‘what if I put saw blades on a Corvette and took it on a frozen lake?’ or the guy who thought ‘what if I turn a Chevrolet G20 van into a snowmobile?’

And over in the UK, YouTuber and robotics enthusiast James Bruton wanted to know ‘what if a bike could move in any direction?’

So, he set about creating his one-off omnidirectional bike. 

He used 11 3D printers to create the bike, but needed to order the balls, which are around 2ft in diameter, from Holland. 

The balls are the same kind used by acrobats for balancing in the circus, and in their new role as one-of-a-kind wheels for the omnidirectional bike, they also help it balance. 

As it can now drive in any direction, it’s an ideal drift bike – although not exactly the most practical bike out there. 

Noting the vehicle’s limitations in an interview with the BBC, Bruton said it had been a success in terms of clicks after racking up several million views. 

“Something like this is not a practical form of transport in any way, but it’s had eight million views on YouTube, so it’s done rather well,” he said.

It’s gained plenty of attention, and opinions, online

As you might have expected, the omnidirectional bike has racked up plenty of opinions, alongside its millions of views. 

Some social media users love it, with one person calling it a ‘real life version of Batman’s Tumbler’. 

“This has to be the coolest ebike ever… I want one,” another said. 

“Dude’s building the coolest thing ever in his free time,” a third wrote.

However, you can’t please everyone, and some suggested that Bruton shouldn’t have bothered trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’.
