These $5,000 EVs raced around a North Carolina track for 24 minutes to see which could cover the largest distance without running out of charge.

The YouTube channel Out of Spec Reviews pitted a BMW i3 up against a Chevy Spark EV and a Nissan LEAF.

We’re used to seeing EVs being pitted against each other, but this was something else altogether.

Which car would come out on top in an endurance race?

These $5,000 EVs went head to head before running out of charge

You’ve probably heard of 24-hour endurance races before, right?

For instance, many cars have competed in the 24-hour endurance race at Germany’s Nürburgring, including, some crazy how, a Renault Twingo.

But for the Out of Spec Reviews team, it was 24 24-minute race at their North Carolina track.

The three EVs racing were the BMW i3, Chevy Spark EV, and Nissan LEAF.

The 24 minutes would be split into two, with one driver taking on the first half and another taking on the second.

“Essentially, the car that gets around the fastest wins points,” the host explained.

“Second place wins points, third place is zero points.

“But if you run out of charge or your car breaks down, it’s a huge penalty.

“Bear in mind, most of these cars could barely do 50ish miles on the highway driving up here on one charge.

“This is going to be really interesting.”

It was time to put the pedal to the metal – or as much as these cars would allow, at least.

The Spark crossed the line first, followed by the LEAF.

And the i3 came in third by a considerable margin.

So, taking all other factors into account, which car was the ultimate winner?

The LEAF and the Spark both finished with one mile of range left, which wasn’t much at all compared to three miles on the i3.

Nobody lost points to their credit, but the i3 didn’t gain any – while the LEAF team gained 500, and the Spark team got 1,000 points.

Pitting cars against one another is always interesting

Seeing cars go head to head – or bonnet to bonnet as the case may be – is always exciting.

We’ve seen it in endurance races before, like when this Volkswagen Beetle took on Mercedes-AMGs and Ferraris.

And then there’s drag races, which definitely get people sitting on the edge.

Who could forget the time a Lamborghini Revuelto crushed a Tesla Model S Plaid in a quarter-mile race?
