How far can you go on an empty tank?
We’ve all been there, when you’re halfway through a journey and you realize that you never filled up your car with gas and there’s no gas station in sight.
Even though your car is telling you it’s empty, you can push past it as long as you understand a few fundamental things.
Every car has a DTE which stands for ‘Distance to Empty’.
It is calculated by combining the measure of the level of fuel in your tank with your recent average fuel economy.
If you work out yours, you can see how far you can go.
Most car’s have a buffer zone which tells your car that the tank is empty when there’s still 10 to 15 percent of fuel in the tank.
This helps people not become immediately stranded once their tank runs out.
Zero miles left in the tank
Running low on gas isn’t great for your car in general as the bottom of the gas tank can be rusty and dirty and you run the risk of pumping dirty gas into your engine.
Regularly running your tank too low without filling it up could cause long-term damage to the tank and to your car as a whole.
Obviously no one intentionally tries to run out of gas, but running the risk of your engine cutting out on the highway or a main road could be incredibly dangerous.
In a worst case scenario, you will have a little bit of leeway, but it’s best to fuel up as soon as you can when your tank tells you it’s empty.
