Lewis Hamilton breaks down F1 weight rules
One of the least known rules of competing in F1 is that of the weight rules.
Each driver who competes in Formula 1 has to adhere to extremely stringent rules regarding their weight.
Thankfully, though, Lewis Hamilton recently took the time to explain the rules in question.
In a video uploaded by Scuderia Ferrari, the seven-time world champion explained the rules.
And it turns out that the weight rules in F1 are far tougher than you might think.
“You might see that I’m always on the weighing scale, which is the worst thing”, Hamilton says.
“Every day of my life I have to weigh myself – every morning”, he continues.
But why do F1 drivers such as Lewis Hamilton have to constantly weigh themselves?
“Weight is everything to us – you see the car is made of carbon fiber, and we have weight limits.”
The seven-time world champion explains the different weight limits that apply in F1.
“The car and the driver has to weigh no more than 82kg”, Hamilton said.
“What that means is that me – with my kit on in my seat – has to be no more than 82kg.”
Change in rules provide greater balance among drivers
But how are taller and heavier drivers meant to be able to conform to these weight limits?
Luckily, Hamilton covers exactly that topic further on in the video.
“So you have some drivers that easily weigh below that, and you have taller drivers that have often been overweight for many years.”
“They changed the rules to make it more even between taller, heavier drivers and small, lighter drivers.”
“So now we all have to be in this window – with the seat and our kit – at no more than 82kg.”
Of course, it makes sense when you consider how weight can affect the performance of the car.
Not only do drivers have to be mentally sharp, but they have to be physically correct as well. The post Lewis Hamilton reveals the strict rule drivers have to follow with F1 weigh-ins appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
