Lyft’s self-driving shuttle buses are coming to American cities next year

Lyft self-driving shuttle buses are coming to America by the end of next year, the company has confirmed.

The ride-hailing company has joined forces with German-based Benteler Mobility, which produces Holon self-driving buses.

The collaboration will see Holon-branded autonomous shuttles integrated into the Lyft platform.

Lyft self-driving shuttle buses will be introduced across key cities and airports in the US from late 2026.

Lyft self-driving shuttle buses will be here next year

Lyft launched in 2012 and is one of the largest ride-hailing platforms in the United States.

In response to new competition from burgeoning autonomous taxi services, like Tesla Robotaxi or Waymo, Lyft announced in March that it had joined forces with numerous partners, including May Mobility, Mobileye, and Marubeni, to start rolling out autonomous vehicles.

Now, the company has revealed ambitious plans to launch autonomous shuttle buses across the US.

This time around, it’s partnered with Benteler Mobility to introduce Holon self-driving shuttles to its platform.

Lyft self-driving shuttle buses will begin testing next year with the goal of going into use in the latter part of 2026.

To begin with, Lyft will focus on key cities and airports in the US, but is eyeing up potential to ‘expand to thousands of vehicles as we bring this service to more geographies around the globe’.

Lyft says the partnership is a major step forward in its goal to ‘build the world’s leading hybrid rideshare network’.

“Benteler Mobility is exactly the kind of partner we need to accelerate our AV ambitions,” Lyft’s Executive Vice President of Driver Experience, Jeremy Bird, said

“They’re not just a tech company — they’re closely linked to a massive automotive supplier with deep manufacturing expertise and global reach.

“Plus, their fleet ownership and financing capabilities mean they have ambitions to own and operate vehicles at scale, not just build them — a rarity in this industry. All this means we can more quickly deploy AVs at the speed and scale our riders deserve.”

Autonomous driving is becoming more and more common

It seems as though autonomous vehicles are set to play a big role in motoring in the future.

Once the stuff of science-fiction movies, the concept of autonomous cars, driverless taxis, and self-driving shuttle buses is now mainstream.

We’ve even seen the world’s first fully autonomous truck yard open up in Texas, and alongside road-going vehicles, there are also several companies working on autonomous flying taxis.

And with tech advancements coming thick and fast, it could be a very interesting few years for self-driving.The post Lyft’s self-driving shuttle buses are coming to American cities next year appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
