Michael Schumacher: F2001 sells for big money
Michael Schumacher was at his dominant peak during the early 2000s.
From 2000 to 2004, Schumacher won five consecutive Drivers’ Championships for Ferrari.
The 2001 season saw the German claim his fourth straight title for Ferrari.
And it’s his car from that season that set such a mammoth record at auction.
A couple of months ago in May, Formula One played host to the legendary Monaco Grand Prix.
Prior to the Grand Prix, Schumacher’s car from 2001 – the F2001 – was up for auction.
The auction, hosted by RM Sotheby’s, saw the supercar smash an auction record.
The winning bid ultimately was a staggering $18.17 million.
This makes it the most expensive car ever to be driven by Michael Schumacher.
It did not, however, break the record for the most expensive Formula One car ever.
That record still belongs to the Mercedes W196 streamliner driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss.
That particular car sold for $52.52 million earlier this year in a separate auction.
Schumacher’s 2001 Ferrari Formula One car is the fourth most-expensive F1 car ever sold.
2001 saw Schumacher dominate with Ferrari
2001 is considered to be one of the best seasons of Michael Schumacher’s career.
The German took nine wins during the 2001 season, including Monaco and Canada.
Schumacher’s win at the Belgian Grand Prix gave him 52 career wins and saw him break Alain Prost’s record.
Prost’s record of 51 had stood since 1993.
But in the Canadian Grand Prix saw Michael finished second to his brother, Ralf Schumacher.
In the process, the Schumacher brothers became the first siblings to finish first and second in a Formula One race.
Michael Schumacher would ultimately wrap up the 2001 Drivers’ Championship with four races left to go.
The German finished the season with 123 points, 58 points ahead of runner-up David Coulthard. The post Michael Schumacher iconic Ferrari Formula One car has set a record with $18 million auction sale appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
