The first man to hit 2,000,000 miles in a car wasn’t happy with that and added another 1,000,000 for fun

The first man to hit 2,000,000 miles in a car – in his Volvo P1800S- wasn’t happy leaving it there, and added another 1,000,000 on top of that.
Irv Gordon is the man who set the Guinness World Record for most miles put on a car.
He did so in his trusty Volvo P1800S, which he bought way back in 1966.
It was never his intention to clock in 3 million miles and set a world record, but that’s what happened.

Irv Gordon, who passed away in November 2018, holds a distinctive world record.
The retired teacher set the Guinness World Record for the most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle.
He picked up his Volvo P1800S in 1966 from Volvoville, a dealership in Huntersville, New York.
It was never his intention to rack up millions of miles and set a record.
At the time, he was just looking for a reliable car, having had some bad luck with a Corvair.
“I liked the way the car looked and the way it rode, but it broke down four blocks from the showroom the night I bought it,” he told Wired in 2010.
He set the record in 1998 when he hit 1,690,000 miles.
In 2002, he got to 2,000,000 miles and then 3,000,000 miles in 2013, having driven all over the continental United States, Canada, and much of Europe.
In the month before he passed, he’d racked up 3,260,257 miles in total.
After his death, his car was returned to Volvo, with which he had had a long-running working relationship.
He’d appeared at many of the company’s events over the years.
Racking up the miles in a big way
This isn’t the car to have totaled up millions of miles on the clock.
A Greek taxi driver got to 2.8 million on his Mercedes 240D over 23 years, while Albert Klein hit 1.6 million in his VW Beetle.
But none of them have surpassed Gordon, and we reckon it’ll be a long while before anyone does.
