Billionaire Larry Ellison bought McLaren F1 for $860,000 and is now selling it for 2574% more

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison bought this McLaren F1 for about $860,000, and he’s now expecting to sell it at auction for about $23 million.

That’s a 2,574 percent increase, which is definitely a nice deal if you can get it.

The F1 is one of the most recognizable, revered, and sought-after supercars from the 1990s, and it shows.

It also holds an unusual (and completely unofficial) record.

Why Ellison’s McLaren F1 is so valuable

The F1 had a limited production run, and Larry Ellison’s 1997 McLaren F1 was one of just seven models exported to the US.

It has had three owners, including the Oracle CEO himself.

But that’s not the only thing that makes it unique, because it also had several McLaren Special Operations post-production upgrades, including a new sports exhaust and a redesigned fuel tank, according to the listing on RM Sotheby’s.

It was also the 53rd example out of 106 racing F1 GTR models built in Woking by McLaren and even had to pass tests to be road legal in California.

It’s only done 6,500 miles.

Ellison bought it for $860,000 and put around 250 miles under its tires for about a decade.

Now, it’s expected to fetch at least $23 million at auction.

The ‘unofficial’ record the F1 can boast

The McLaren F1 holds something you could reasonably call a record.

It’s by far the newest entry in the list of most valuable cars in the world, and the only vehicle that was built after the end of the 1960s.

Kind of like a millennial walking into a room full of boomers and Gen Xers.

The top 10 list of most valuable cars ever sold at auction features exclusively cars built between the 1950s and 1960s.

And even if you stretch it to the top 20, you’ll only find two exceptions, a 1935 Duesenberg and a 1995 McLaren F1.

And here’s another fun fact.

Even if Ellison’s McLaren F1 did sell for $23 million, it still wouldn’t make the top 10.

It would, however, become the most expensive McLaren F1 ever sold. The post Billionaire Larry Ellison bought McLaren F1 for $860,000 and is now selling it for 2574% more appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
