A brief history of the Popemobile

When Pope Francis passed away, the fate of his Popemobile drew a lot of attention.

For those who aren’t aware, the Popemobile is the car that Popes use during public appearances.

You’ll have seen it on the news at one point or another.

This specially designed vehicle allows for the pontiff to travel through crowds, while remaining safe thanks to the bulletproof glass.

This latter design element was deemed necessary after the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.

Much like presidential vehicles, safety had to come first.

All vehicles in the Vatican City have registrations beginning with SC – an abbreviation of the Latin Status Civitatis Vaticanae – or Vatican City State.

Mercedes-Benz has been making the Popemobile for a long while, and that includes the electric version, which was unveiled back in December 2024.

Based on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EV, this $500,000 G-Wagen was capable of driving more than 200,000 miles and was built to last more than 30 years.

There was speculation circulating at the time of Pope Francis’s death about what would happen to this relatively new vehicle, but no concrete answers were presented.

Now, though, what will happen to this Popemobile has been confirmed.

Pope Francis’s heartwarming final wish for his $500,000 car

One of Pope Francis’s final wishes was that his car be transformed into a health clinic and sent to Gaza, as reported by Vatican News.

In the months before his passing, Pope Francis entrusted the initiative to Caritas Jerusalem, a charity which works to ‘serve the vulnerable people’ in the region.

It was Pope Francis’ sincerely held belief that ‘children are not numbers. They are faces. Names. Stories. And each one is sacred.’

As with many conflicts in the world, the ongoing violence in Gaza has taken the lives of many children, and put others at risk.

The Popemobile will be repurposed into a health clinic to serve the needs of the population.

It’ll be fitted out with equipment for diagnosis, examination, and treatment.

This will include vaccines, tests for infections, and other life-saving supplies.

The made-over Popemobile will be staffed by medics and doctors.

In a press release, Peter Brune, the Secretary General of Caritas Sweden, explained the good it will do.

“With the vehicle, we will be able to reach children who today have no access to health care – children who are injured and malnourished.”The post Part of Pope Francis’ final heartwarming wish was to do with his $500,000 Popemobile appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
