Six years in the making, the $1.78 million De Tomaso P72 production model is finally ready to be unveiled, and it’s a beauty.

The retro-futuristic hypercar was originally introduced as a show-stopping concept at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, teasing collectors who’ve since waited for this news.

Looking like it drove straight out of the ‘60s, the P72 is like a carbon-fiber time machine with a very modern price tag.

With only 72 units produced and all build slots sold, buyers are forking out €1.6 million ($1.78 million) for this vintage design.

Inspired by the Carroll Shelby-designed 1960s De Tomaso P70, the P72’s retro-inspired quilted leather interior and analogue gauges blend American muscle with European design heritage.

Built to blast, not just to pose, the P72 brings together old-school and new-school performance with a manual gearbox and 750 horsepower engine from a Roush-tuned 5.0 liter supercharged V8.

“The P72 was our promise to faithfully revive a historic marque,” said De Tomaso CEO Norman Choi.

“This first production-specification vehicle embodies everything we stand for: a mechanical soul, timeless beauty, and a driving experience that rises above modern convention. It is our echo through time — now made real.”

Helping to engineer the De Tomaso P72 is Germany’s HWA, founded by AMG’s Hans Werner Aufrecht.

Final testing and certification is now underway, with customer deliveries of the new car expected to begin later this year.

Getting excited? Well, it seems there could be more on the way from De Tomaso.

The P900 is the P72’s ultra-limited, track-only sibling with a V10 or optional V12 engine (if you’re brave enough).

The marque first showcased the P900 back in 2022, and confirmed that production would be strictly limited to just 18 units.

Since then, we’ve not had an update on the status of the P900.

It goes without saying, that if you’re interested, then get in quick, as these tend to be the most desirable cars money can’t buy.

Meanwhile, the P72 sold out before production began, but it’ll live rent-free in your head. The post The $1.78M De Tomaso P72 took 6 years to build and it’s finally ready appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
