Volvo P1800 becomes an icon of a car
The Volvo P1800 is a pretty legendary car in its own right.
Produced for 12 years between 1961 and 1973, the P1800 became a big hit.
It was roundly lauded and appreciated for its elegance, performance, and reliability.
To this day, it endures as one of Volvo’s most popular and beloved models.
It gained mainstream popularity in the UK after starring in The Saint as Roger Moore’s car.
Moore’s portrayal of lead character Simon Templar helped him land the role of James Bond.
Interestingly, Moore liked the P1800 so much that he actually bought one for himself.
Production of the P1800 ended in 1973, after being in continuous production for 12 years.
In that time, it had seen several variants released, including a Shooting Brake wagon.
P1800 goes from an icon to a legend
Digression aside, the Volvo P1800 is the star of today’s story for a different reason.
Over the years, you may have heard the story of a man called Irv Gordon.
Essentially, the short version of the story is that Gordon was a schoolteacher from Long Island, New York.
Back on Friday, June 30th, 1966, he bought himself a brand-new car.
But he didn’t just buy himself any car – he bought himself a Volvo P1800.
Gordon paid $4,150 for his Volvo, and then brought it back to the dealership the following Monday.
He had already clocked 1,500 miles on the odometer and was bringing the car in for its first service.
As it turned out, this service with Volvo would be the first of many over a nearly 50-year span of ownership.
Because of his long daily commute, as well as his love of road trips, by 1987, Gordon had racked up over one million miles in his Volvo P1800.
Fifteen years later, he then passed the two-million-mile mark.
In 2013, the schoolteacher surpassed the three-million-mile mark of ownership.
Speaking to Volvo, he described the incredible longevity and durability of his P1800.
He explained that it ‘never broken down, never failed to start, and always takes me where I want to go.’
“Ice, snow, blizzards… I’ve been in conditions you wouldn’t believe – and the car has always got me through it without any problems,” he went on.
Sadly, he passed away in mid-November of 2018.
And his odometer officially came in at a record-breaking 3,260,257 miles driven.
In tribute, Volvo continues to honor Irv and his P1800 by carefully driving and maintaining his car.
It’s exactly what he would have wanted to happen. The post Volvo which drove 3.2 million miles and never broke down had perfect ending after its owner passed away appeared first on Supercar Blondie.
