The huge jet has a very special task to complete when soaring through the sky.

But the best part is, it’s helping to emit less of a carbon footprint, too.

We all know that some airplanes can be huge

Fleets of aircraft have different purposes and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

From a startup in Colorado building ‘Son of Concorde‘ using wraps inspired by shark skin, to a man turning $47,000 box full of metal pieces into full-sized airplane, the opportunities really are endless.

But, just wait until you see this huge plane and what it’s used for

It’s called the WindRunner

Brought to fruition by Colorado company Radia, the aircraft is designed to be able to carry and transport wind turbines.

With typical planes being too small to complete the task, this could be the answer that the industry has been waiting for. And also the largest.

It has ’12X the interior volume of a Boeing 747 and the ability to operate from short, semi-prepared runways.’

“WindRunner’s unique capabilities not only allow it to meet the requirements of today’s airlift missions but also allow it to open the aperture of what is possible to move by air,” states the company itself.

Plus, it also has other uses, including defense and aerospace.

The plane comes in at 356 feet long, 79 feet high, and has a cruising speed of Mach 0.6

⁠What are the latest developments with the WindRunner plane?

Well, the company announced back in November of 2024 that an Italian aerospace company called MAGROUP Magnaghi Aerospace had been selected to develop the WndRunner’s landing system.

“Magnaghi joins a growing list of suppliers that will develop various on-board systems for WindRunner, including Leonardo in Italy, who will develop the fuselage,” the company stated.

But, perhaps the best thing about the WindRunner is that it’s not as harmful to the environment as other aircraft.

Radia itself says that, ‘most importantly, WindRunner will eventually run on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to reduce its carbon footprint,’ with the plane emitting just ‘0.002 kilograms of CO2e per megawatt hour.’
