Tesla Robotaxi rider receives strange call telling her to exit the vehicle immediately

A Tesla Robotaxi rider received a call mid-trip from the EV maker telling her to get out of the vehicle immediately, leaving her stranded.

YouTuber Ellie Sheriff was excited to take her first Robotaxi ride, but things didn’t quite go as planned.

She and her pal hailed the autonomous cab via the app and hopped in, with Ellie proclaiming ‘the future is here’.

But part way into the journey she received a call from Tesla telling her to exit the vehicle.

Why did the Tesla Robotaxi rider get told to exit mid-trip?

The highly anticipated Tesla Robotaxi service was launched late last month in Austin, Texas.

For now, the service is strictly invite-only with a list that includes numerous influencers and YouTubers, such as Dirty Tesla who took a trip that didn’t exactly run smoothly

Ellie Sheriff, who runs the Ellie in Space YouTube channel, was also among the first people to get a chance to try out the service.

However, it didn’t quite go to plan for the Tesla Robotaxi rider.

Mid-trip, Ellie received an ‘unexpected’ call from Tesla and was told her trip would be cut short due to incoming bad weather.

“So we had to get out of the Robotaxi, because weather is coming in,” Sheriff said as she stood in a field after exiting the vehicle.

Ellie and her friend attempted to get another ride but were told there was ‘high service demand’.

Ellie explained that if the weather got too bad, the Robotaxi wouldn’t operate ‘due to an abundance of caution during testing’.

Thankfully, she wasn’t stranded for too long and was able to eventually hail a Robotaxi to take them back home.

“I’m just going to keep it real, I don’t want to be a rah-rah Tesla cheerleader,” Ellie said.

“It is very cool, however, this is a limitation currently, how it is. You shouldn’t have to terminate the service because it’s about to rain.”

The pair ended up being picked up by the same EV that had dropped them off, and they were taken back to where they had been picked up from.

The Robotaxis are currently operating with some restrictions

During its limited test service in Austin, Tesla said it will not operate its Robotaxis in bad weather.

The dozen or so EVs also won’t be tackling difficult intersections and won’t be carrying passengers under the age of 18.  YouTube Video

Invites sent out by Tesla said the initial service would only be available between 6:00 AM and 12:00 AM and limited to a geofenced area.

The autonomous cabs also have Tesla ‘safety monitors’ sitting in the front seat to oversee all trips and intervene if required, like on this occasion 60 hours into the launch.
